Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli had died in a recent battle. They found themselves at the beginning of a long staircase. Mandos was there to meet them.
"Welcome!" he said, "I am Mandos, you are at the last stair. You must climb the stairs to get to Valinor. At intervals I will tell you jokes, if you laugh you will not be granted admission to the great city." After he said this, Mandos dissappeared.
Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli shrugged and started to climb. At a third of the way Mandos appeared and told them a joke. Aragorn despite himself began laughing. He vanished in a puff of smoke. Mandos also disappeared. Legolas and Gimli continued their climb. At two-thirds of the way Mandos appeared again, he told another joke. Gimli laughed so hard that he nearly fell of the stair. He and Mandos disappeared. Legolas continued his climb alone. At the top Mandos appeared again to tell the final joke.
Suddenly Legolas began cracking up, when his laughing subsided, Mandos asked,
"What are you luaghing at? I didn't even tell you the first joke!"
"I just got the first one!" Legolas answered.
